Boiler servicing is one of those things that’s very easily overlooked and never really thought about. But it could be the key to picking up on issues before they become problems for you and your loved ones in your home. Here we cover some of the most common boiler servicing questions including: why should i get my boiler serviced? How much does a boiler service cost? When should i get my boiler serviced?
When should i get my boiler serviced?
We recommend having your boiler serviced by a professional gas safe engineer at least once a year.
With many boiler warranties you’re actually required to complete a regular service to ensure your boiler is safe. An annual boiler service will meet most insurance policy requirements, though you’ll need to check with your insurance provider to be sure.
Summer is the best time to book your service in. Not only will you be making sure you’re set once the colder weather kicks in, but also summer is the quietest time of the year for gas engineers giving you more flexibility on what time and day they are available.
Why should i get my boiler serviced?
Keep your warranty intact
All new boilers come with a warranty ranging from 2 years to 10 years, this warranty protects you from any genuine faults with your boiler as the manufacturer will repair the boiler free of charge. To keep this warranty valid manufacturers require the boiler to be serviced which assures that the fault is genuine not due to negligence.
If you do not have a service once in every 12 months then your warranty could be void and if a problem occurs, you’re likely to be liable to pay the full repair costs.
Catch faults in your system early
The majority of the time you won’t know about a problem with your boiler until you’re left with no heating and/or hot water. During a boiler service, your expert gas engineer will be able to identify any underlying problems or potential issues before it’s too late. No matter how small the issue with your boiler, ignoring it could lead to a costly repair bill.
Keep you and your loved ones safe
Gas leaks are rare however extremely dangerous or even fatal. Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapsing and a loss of consciousness. 250 hospitalisations a year are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning between 2001 and 2010 in England & Wales. Therefore, it’s critical that you have your boiler serviced regularly giving you peace of mind that you and your family are safe.
Save money on your energy bills
As your boiler gets older, it inevitably becomes less energy efficient but with regular servicing you can slow down this process. During your servicing, your engineer will carry out all necessary checks to ensure that your boiler is running as efficiently as possible. The more energy efficient your boiler is, the more money you could save over the year. A boiler that is not working to its full potential and isn’t performing efficiently, could cause an unexpected increase in your energy bills.
How Much Does A Boiler Service Cost?
On average it costs around £80 to get your boiler serviced although this can vary from £60 – £100.
You could however take out boiler and central heating cover. This costs more, around £180-£300, but will also cover you for any breakdowns.
If you have a cover policy or insurance for your boiler then check to see if an annual service is included as part of the charge.
